Essay / Public Schools and Success - 686
Public Schools Success and Failure (Maybe Dropout?) In school you either fail or you fail, is there really a difference these days? There are two different public school systems. The former is based primarily, but not entirely, in the country's suburbs and some of the wealthier urban jurisdictions. The second system is based mainly in poorer areas and rural areas. Public schools located in urban and wealthier areas of the country have lower dropout rates, but they increasingly enroll students who are not receiving an appropriate education. These students graduate, but lack the basic skills they need to succeed in college or a career. In doing so, employers and collages expect these students to master the basics of math, reading, writing, science, and social studies. Instead, they must teach or students must follow alternative school programs. In the second public school system, they experience increasingly high dropout rates. This means we have a large number of dropouts attempting to enter the workforce without understanding the basic skills required. The second school system also sees students receiving their diplomas when they are not ready to receive them. School districts each have challenges with the system, although the system in poorer areas has even more problems. For what ? Money matters in education, there's no denying that, but while money matters, it's not the only thing that matters. There are other things that can play a role in a student's education, such as school safety and discipline, teacher quality, and support from...... middle of paper ......they and everyone else thinks they are ready for this, when in reality they are not ready at all. Most of these students who are promoted through the system are athletes. The school takes sporting events much more seriously than it takes the education of its students. They feel that if they raise their rating just a little higher, so they can play the next game, it won't hurt anything. The reality is that it hurts something; it harms students, making them truly unprepared for the world outside of school and sports. Having both school systems broken is a huge problem in the country, whether it's a dropout rate that's too high or passing students who have to be rejected. This is something that we as a community really need to look at and try to come up with a plan to improve our children's education because they are the future..
