The worst mass suicide in history was the Jonestown Massacre. The Jonestown Massacre took place on November 18, 1978. More than 900 people were killed in the massacre, including 232 children. The massacre occurred on land in Guyana that the Peoples Temple, led by James Jones, had purchased. Peoples Temple was a church led by James Jones that preached about diversity and racism. James was not a real preacher, all his speeches were based on his opinions and theories about the world. He pretended to be a doctor. People gave him money and he pretended to heal them. He founded his church in 1965. After getting bad press for his speeches, he took his followers and moved them all to Guyana, telling them they were going to live more communally. Jones' supporters gave him money supposedly for the church, all working adults gave him at least 25 percent of their paychecks, and everyone who received Social Security checks gave him their checks. The people of Jonestown raised animals and farmed crops in the middle of the Guyanese jungle as a new way of life.....
