“Pay to Play or Not to Play” When we talk about college sports today, we don't talk about who wins or which schools recruit the best recruits. The topic at hand is pay for play and many college athletes want it. The question is why? Aren’t athletes already paid through scholarships and education? Another question asked is, are the kids even enjoying their education or are they just doing what the professional leagues ask them to do? What matters is how schools and the NCAA will determine which sports are worth paying for and how much money they will pay for them with. Personally, I don't think athletes should be paid. They are students, not professionals. Putting paid college education aside, athletes' learning is not only a necessity, they must prepare for the next level of play. There are constant questions regarding paying college athletes. Where will the money come from...one statistic showed that even though the Connecticut men's and women's teams won the national championship, the school is still $16 million in the hole. What sports are worth paying for and how does it work under Title IX? What will happen to the athlete's amateur status? Almost everyone asks these questions, whether former players or analysts, even players and colleges themselves ask the same questions when trying to understand if the game was paid, how could it work. This is very interesting and one wonders what the NCAA will do. In today's era of social media becoming an integral part of daily life, making money from sports has never been easier.
