Essay / Resentment - 666
ResentmentThe title of my designed piece is Resentment. The article talks about young Catholic birth mothers being forced into adoption by their parents. It is based on the stimulus of oppression in society. There is a main oppressor and a main character who is oppressed, but every character is oppressed in one way or another. The play is set in modern times but moves from 1985 to the present day and England. I will compare my designed piece to Bertolt Brecht's Caucasian Chalk Circle. This play takes place after World War II, in a badly bombed Caucasian village. I will compare the themes and styles that Brecht uses in the play to those used in the designed play. I will also relate and compare the theme of oppression to the “theater of the oppressed.” It is a kind of forum theater created by Boal. Forum theater is an interactive form of theater that transforms theater from the “monologue” of traditional performance into a “dialogue” between the audience and the stage. Forum Theater seeks to show a person (the oppressed) who attempts to confront oppression and fails because of the resistance of one or more obstacles (the oppressor). My designed play is based on “theatre of the oppressed” but does not include much interaction with the audience. The audience is not used at all in the play, although a short scene takes place among the audience. This is very different from Boal, as he tries to involve the audience in the play as much as possible. In the Caucasian Chalk Circle, there are many connections to the theme of oppression. Grusha is trapped because she knows it would be morally wrong to leave the baby with the soldiers, but if she takes him with her, both their lives will be in danger. In this situation, she is oppressed by society forcing her to do what is morally right and by her own guilt because she would be able to live with herself if she simply left the baby..
