In a time of transition when people were beginning to question the purpose of government, fifty-five men representing thirteen victorious colonies of the new world met in Philadelphia, in Pennsylvania. They gathered here to discuss and develop a government never before known to the world. This revolutionary idea of government would forever change the way the world viewed power and freedom, but to produce such a government, the fifty-five delegates would first have to answer a few questions. A major theme that emerged throughout the previous revolution was the importance of freedom. Supporters of the revolution had repeatedly emphasized that all men were entitled to certain freedoms, but the questions left unanswered during this session of the Constitutional Convention were: "What exactly were these freedoms?" » and “How can we form a government that can coexist with these freedoms?” » According to Mr. Webster, the current definition of freedom is “the quality or state of being free; the power to do what we want. Today, the concept of a government designed to protect liberty seems natural, but during the time of the Constitutional Convention, this foreign concept came with many complications. One example of a problem the delegates faced was the fact that giving people freedom allowed them to make good and bad choices. Because it is human nature to compete for power, it was necessary to create a system that would limit the power of the government and guarantee it to the people. This would protect popular freedoms without fear of government interference.
