  • Essay / Equality 7-2521 - 936

Anthem is a short story written by Ayn Rand, in which Equality 7-2521, the protagonist, struggles for self-identification living in a collectivist society. Equality believes that individuality is a prominent aspect of a person's life because it defines and describes who a person is. He endures all the difficulties in his life living with people who support collectivism and who reject his ideas. For example, when Equality 7-2521 invents and exhibits the light bulb, the World Council rejects it and tells him that it is selfish to work on something alone instead of working with his brothers. The World Council threatens to destroy the light bulb, but Equality does not allow this to happen and rebels, so he is forced to exile himself from his society. Equality realizes that he is different from others because he cares about his happiness unlike others who are convinced that the happiness of a group matters more than the happiness of an individual. After Equality is sent into exile, he discovers the perfect place to live: the Uncharted Forest. Equality feels very safe in the forest and he is happy because for the first time, he does not wake up in the morning because he has to but because he has had a good rest. He enjoys eating for the first time and realizes that he is actually happiest when he is away from everyone in town. Before seeing his reflection in the water, Equality said, “We knelt down by the stream and leaned over to drink. And then we stopped. He also renames himself because he feels like a new person after his discovery of freedom. At the end of the novella, Equality comes across a house in the Unspeakable Times in which he and the Golden One can live. Equality is in love with the Golden One. who followed him into the forest after he left the city. Later, Equality 7-2521 gives the Golden One a new name: Gaea. They live together in harmony and finally discover the meaning of the unspeakable word "I" instead of which they always used the word "We" to refer to themselves, as did all the other collectivists. After finding everything Equality was looking for, he is a happy individual living in a perfect place with the woman he loves..
