Essay / The Case for Rating - 926
I put a lot of effort into my diagnostic essay The Case for Rating. I had some anxiety about writing it since it was my first attempt at my first online course. However, I carefully studied the rubric and the essay on the subject. I followed the prompt explicitly. The prompt states: “Your job is to read the course rubric (under “Course Content”) as well as the item below. Once you have done this, you will write a two to three page essay explaining what grade the work below should receive” (Westrope). Based on my performance and adherence to the instructions, I believe the grade my essay should receive is a B. After reading the entire rubric, I believe my essay most closely adhered to the criterion for the category " B—STRONG—A clearly above average essay. » (scoring rubric). Under this heading, there were three areas. The first was “Organization and Development” which approached the task in a clear and analytical manner, and responded to the needs of the audience by providing adequate context. This area also mentioned the need for a clearly focused controlling idea or thesis (Grading Rubric). The second area was “Research Presentation” which addressed providing effective support and analysis through examples or facts and the need to make distinctions between the student's ideas and those of others (grading rubric). This area also mentions the need for the student to develop their own ideas and not depend on sources as a substitute. The need to follow MLA guidelines and cite sources effectively is also addressed (Grading Rubric). The final area was “Mechanics” which focuses on punctuation, spelling, grammar, syntax and diction (Grading Rubric). As the character Polonius said: “This above all: be true to yourself” (Shakespeare, Act I, Scene III). So I have to be true to myself. I think my organization and development have been excellent. My research presentation was superior and my mechanics were significantly above average. For all this reason, my diagnostic essay deserves a B.Works CitedGrading Rubric for English 101/103.
