Essay / Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Legal - 945
Marriage is the sacred bond between two people who love and cherish each other. Traditionally, this bond was established between man and woman. With so much change in the world, there are more and more openly gay people in our society. Although people are increasingly accepting the existence of homosexuality, gays and lesbians are still considered unequal when it comes to marriage. Homosexual couples should have the same rights to marry as heterosexual couples. Denying this right is unfair and discriminates against a group of people. Same-sex marriage has become more of a political issue when in reality it should be left to individual personal and religious beliefs. Even though a few states recognize same-sex marriage or domestic partnership, couples must still feel inferior due to the few or no benefits afforded to them, while heterosexual marriages enjoy a multitude of rights, privileges and advantages. If it is our constitutional right to marry the person of our choice, then so be it. It doesn't matter how the next person feels, because they have the right to feel whatever they want to feel, just like a person can fall in love and marry their partner. Marriage is supposed to unite two people for better or for worse. rest of their lives. Why would anyone want to deny another person the opportunity to dedicate their life to another person, regardless of gender? According to a chart by Stateline.org editor Christine Vestal, only six states allow same-sex marriage: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire. New Jersey and Connecticut are the only two states to recognize civil unions for same-sex couples...... middle of paper ...... and religion. Many may think that it is simply a tradition for a man and a woman to be married and that same-sex marriage is simply not the norm. On the other hand, what I just mentioned was also not normal and yet as a nation we overcame them. It took time and great effort to win these rights and the privilege to make our own choices. Today, many are more open-minded and tolerant of homosexuality and same-sex couples, and a handful of states are more accepting of the ideal of same-sex marriage. It's only a matter of time before the rest of the nation accepts this.
