Essay / The Wechsler Nonverbal Scale as an Instrument in...
It is not a myth that an increasing number of multilingual children are entering school in the United States with English as a second language . Most of these children have limited oral English and reading skills (McCardle, Mele-McCarthy, Cutting, Leos, & D'Emilio, 2005). Academic achievement is lower for this group of children than for many other groups, and they tend to raise questions about learning problems and consider special education evaluations. Historically, psychologists have used standardized testing instruments to assess and measure abilities. The use of nonverbal tests provides an organized way to efficiently gather a large amount of information regarding a candidate's cognitive abilities. Psychologists working in the United States, particularly in schools, will encounter a large population of children who are non-English speakers or whose first language is not English. Salient characteristics that identify minority groups include: heritage, a common ancestral language, values and socio-economic status. In the case of a Latino population, since many will be evaluated for possible placement, they tend to appear to share two characteristics: low achievement and intelligence coefficient scores. This article analyzes the Wechsler Nonverbal Scale (WNV) as an instrument that adds an explicit commitment to fairness and accurate assessment of a wide variety of individuals (Brunnert, Naglieri, and Hardy-Braz, 2009), even those whose first language is other than the English in which this paper emphasizes.I.
