  • Essay / Exploration and space travel: necessary or wasteful?

Space Travel Summary EssayIn America, space travel is a controversial issue that many discuss. Although exciting, some people find it unnecessary and a waste of money. There are also many risks associated with space travel and there are many issues bigger than space travel that should be focused on. There are ethical, diplomatic and economic issues that must be considered before making decisions regarding space exploration. Before making any decisions regarding space travel, the most important thing to consider would be the ethical issues that need to be addressed. Throughout world history, there has always been a moral dilemma about taking other people's land and property. One issue would be what would be “a fair process for commercializing or claiming ownership in space” (Source I). During English colonialism, there existed “a moral permissiveness to settle on lands already occupied by Native American peoples or Native Americans.” (Source I) When traveling in space, people enter a foreign country that does not belong to them. Although some may say that space and planets, as far as humans know, have no inhabitants who own them, there is no problem with humans taking them over. Just because space and other planets aren't inhabited doesn't mean humans deserve it or own it. Humans already “don’t have a very good track record when it comes to protecting [their] planet. [People] have expanded human presence into virgin forests, leading to disruption of migration routes, soil erosion and species extinction. » (Source E) Who can say that what humans cause on planet Earth will not affect “the far reaches of the solar system? » (Source E) Diseases circulate between countries all the time, a middle of paper ...... resources. Once the ethical, diplomatic and economic questions have been resolved, space exploration will then have to be considered. This may expand human civilization, but it is not a necessity and may even be detrimental.
