  • Essay / Boniface Wimmer Research Paper - 1128

Boniface Wimmer is considered one of the greatest missionaries of the 19th century. His mission was to establish a Benedictine monastery abroad, in the United States, to help the thousands of Catholic Germans who fled their country in search of a better life. “Today, there are more than thirty abbeys and monasteries that trace their roots to Archbishop Boniface Wimmer, OSB” With the grace of God, Boniface Wimmer succeeded. He was considered a “man on a mission.” His tenacious attitude helped him expand the mission of the Benedictine Order across the Atlantic Ocean. The Benedictines were considered not only missionaries, but also teachers and priests. The strong sense of bond and connection within the community was vital to the Benedictine Order then, as it still is today. On January 14, 1809, Sebastian Wimmer was born in the small town of Thalmassing, Germany. His parents, Peter and Elizabeth Lang Wimmer, were tavern owners. Sebastian's desire to help others was evident from an early age, as he believed he had been called by the Lord to devote his life exclusively to the priesthood. The simple monastic life was attractive! Sebastian Wimmer was an intelligent young man. He attended the University of Regensburg, also known as Regensburg, where he studied many classical and philosophical courses, then studied law at the University of Regensburg. A scholarship opened at the Gregorianum and Wimmer felt compelled to learn more about it in pursuit of his studies for the priesthood. Wimmer passed the scholarship exam. He was offered a scholarship and remained there until the end of his theological studies. On July 31, 1831, at the age of twenty-two, Sebastian... middle of paper... forward” was a motto by which Archbishop Boniface Wimmer lived. Archabbot Boniface Wimmer died on December 8, 1887, but his legacy lives on! He was a young Benedictine monk who traveled to America in 1846 with a vision of establishing new monastic communities for the Benedictine Order. He wanted to convert immigrant refugees in America. Most importantly, he wanted to create a community that would grow in the spirit of St. Benedict. Archabbot Boniface Wimmer was a heavenly father who guided many young monks on their spiritual journey. At the consecration of the Arcabbaye Saint-Vincent, Bishop Canevin paraphrased Boniface's achievements with these eloquent words: "Blessed is he who has not sought gold and who has not put his trust in silver or the treasure. Who is he that we should praise him? Because he did wonderful things in life.”
