  • Essay / The differences between verbal and non-verbal...

Verbal communication is spoken while non-verbal communication takes many forms. Nonverbal communication is different from verbal communication because verbal communication is expressed language, using many underlying contexts; while the non-verbal is presented using kinetics, holistic means, proxemics as well as chronicles. It's easy to assume that the only differences between the two are that one is expressed and the other is not, but by explaining what is verbal communication and what is non-verbal communication it will help you understand that this is not the case and will show you what the main differences are. With verbal communication, the only way to send a message is vocally, and the only way to receive it is to hear it audibly. Regardless of the type of communication, there is a risk that the message will be misinterpreted. Verbal communication comes with paralanguage, this can change the meaning of your words depending on how you say them, the tone you use, the volume level, the tone, and how often you pause (Hybels and Weaver 121 ). The meaning of verbal communication differs depending on the metamessages. It is a subtext that gives an alternative meaning to the words spoken. For example, people say things like "Let's do this again someday" when in reality, they are saying it out of politeness, instead of saying something offensive. Added to the metamessages is doublespeak, the sole purpose of which is to distort the message, saying “downsize” instead of being fired. A euphemism similar to that, the only difference between the two is the goal. One aims to deceive (doublespeak) and the other to soften the wording (euphemism). Nonverbal communication involves using body language, gestures, facial expressions, and hand signals to communicate with others...... middle of paper ....
