Although on the surface the subject matter and substance of the films are very different, some of Lee's trademarks shine through in both films, thus linking them and giving an idea of Spike Lee's style in all of his films. Basically, one can be forgiven for not realizing that Do the Right Thing and 25th Hour are both Spike Lee films. They are very different and seem to represent two entirely different styles of storytelling. In Do the Right Thing, we see Lee tackle racial tensions and racism itself, all over the course of a single, hot summer day, while in 25th Hour we see the final days of a man, Montgomery Brogan, as he mentally prepares himself. leaving everything he has behind on one last day of freedom before going to prison. These are very clearly two different plots, as 25th Hour is entirely removed from the themes of racial tension of Do the Right Thing, and even our main character in 25th Hour is seen dating a black Hispanic woman, Naturelle Riviera, who is finds herself to be the only one. notable person of color in the film. For those who have not completely unpacked and mentally reviewed both films, one can find almost no similarities in the films, except for their director. Fortunately, upon closer inspection, one can find some overarching themes that can successfully indicate that both films have earned their mark as Lee's works. The easiest thing to notice in 25th Hour and Do the Right Thing is the director's use of color. Sometimes, in the shots, we will see a complete saturation of the current scene in a certain color, most often red, which we see notably in Do the Right Thing when the three old men (Sweet Dick Willie and his friends) stand upright. in front of a bright red wall. Red is generally used to indicate tensions or simmering passions (tensions, in this case). However, in 25th Hour, although we see several shots of full saturation in the club scenes, we also see the director using the lack of color. According to cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, the idea is to give the impression that the city is covered in ashes, in reference to its context in post-9/11 New York. The other thing people may notice is the use of allusion. In Do the Right Thing, we see Radio Raheem giving an updated version of the "Love and Hate" speech originally delivered in "The Night of the Hunter", which is the main allusion in this film, while in 25th Hour , our protagonist Montgomery Brogan has a large, almost oversized poster from the film "Cool Hand Luke", intended to provide insight into the character. Finally, we see an allusion to Catcher in the Rye in both films, where in Do the Right Thing we see characters of different ethnicities giving dismissive speeches about other ethnicities, while in 25th Hour we see Montgomery's reflection Brogan delivers dismissive speeches about different groups. seen around New York.
