Essay / The Importance of Media Freedom - 632
Defined as a characteristic of the natural rights of a human being, media freedom is the freedom to express one's individuality through various electronic devices and published materials. For a government to demonstrate its commitment to media freedom of expression, it must optimize its performance on freedom of expression and belief, organizations and economic privilege (Millennium Challenge Corporation). Additionally, a government's political regime should measure the quality of electoral procedures, political involvement, government corruption, and government transparency. Since December 1993, the United Nations General Assembly has established World Press Freedom Day to remind the international community to preserve and declare that media freedom is the most precious human right. As a mark of honor, World Press Freedom Day also reminds media professionals who risked or lost their lives in the line of duty (Yassine Imrani). The only United Nations agency empowered to defend the rights to freedom of expression, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has broadened the subject by highlighting among the main problems of any press freedom in the world and believes that press freedom should be the duty of every human being because it is the key to all kinds of human and democratic rights (Rebecca Capuano). Among these issues, there is a correlation between media freedom and different aspects of development, economy, governance and sustainability of a country's citizens. The Center for Peace and Human Security was able to assess this valid correlation within three mechanisms (press freedom and development). The first coordinates that media freedom acts as an arbiter for individuals and governments middle of paper...... there have been countless violations against media activists where they have been directly killed or even tortured to death (IAmSyria.org). The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) then declared the need for rapid action by civil society organizations and medical treatment. Overall, media freedom makes for a better, more organized government. For countries that enjoy media freedom, there is better political stability and an absence of violence; on the other hand, countries that do not tolerate media freedom express an opposing view and face human rights issues. Countries facing these issues have a negative correlation resulting in low media freedom and oppressive government. In contrast, countries without these problems have a positive correlation that corresponds to measures enabling media freedom and good governance..
