  • Essay / A Good Man Is Hard to Find by Flannery O'Connor

As humans, everyone thinks they are dying and wonder whether or not they will go to heaven or hell. Flannery O'Connor's A Good Man is Hard to Find features the general theme of death throughout its story. She also talks about how racism is bad, especially when talking about the grandmother. She also writes in this story, to let readers know that they appreciate what is around us. She writes about evil in the world and makes a lot of references to heaven and hell and the fact that ultimately God chooses who goes to hell and who goes to heaven. In A Good Man is Hard to Find, the author made a lot of references to heaven. and hell. O'Connor writes, "The trees were full of silver-white sunlight, and the meanest of them shone" (354). She was referring to heaven in this statement. Paradise for everyone is this big and beautiful white place. He is said to be in the clouds which are white. O'Connor also states: "The old lady made herself comfortable, taking off her white cotton gloves and placing them with her purse on the shelf outside the back window. The children's mother always wore pants and always had her hair tied in a green scarf, but the grandmother wore a navy blue straw sailor hat with a bouquet of violets on the brim and a navy blue dress with a floral print. small white peas. Her collars and cuffs were made of white organdy trimmed with lace and, on her neckline, she had pinned a spray of fabric violets containing a sachet. In the event of an accident, anyone who saw her dead on the road would immediately know that she was a lady” (354). This foreshadows what happened at the end of the story, but also ensures that the reader notices the use of all of his white outfits. It’s also a big part of the story because the grandmother is not a boy...... middle of paper ... heaven” (365). It's as if the grandmother was free from everything. She was finally at peace with herself and was finally the person she wanted to be. There are a lot of themes in Flannery O'Connor's A Good Man is Hard to Find. Not being racist is one of them, because racism is evil. Appreciating your surroundings is another, don't take things for granted. The family in this story didn't appreciate things until it was too late. We don't want to live our lives in regret, and that's what O'Connor wants readers to understand. She also wants everyone who reads this story to live as God would have someone do, not because they want something in return, but because they are truly good people. The final theme is that you cannot escape death no matter how hard you try. If a person is supposed to die, it will happen, and then they will disappear with the wind..
