Whatever the type of factory, one thing is consistent in the precariousness of this sector of work. Employees are overworked, working 10 to 12 hour days with little or no break time. They are also extremely underpaid, earning only about $2 an hour, they lack time with their families, and there is a lack of job stability. These negative factors not only impact the ability to maintain an appropriate lifestyle for themselves and their family, but they also impact how the worker is able to view themselves and their identity. This is seen through men who feel they have lost their sense of masculinity because they are given unskilled, low-paid jobs in factories compared to their female colleagues. This was also evident when employees and Foxconn felt like they were losing their sense of dignity when they were forced to perform degrading work or when they were belittled, which ultimately led to a negative view of themselves which led to suicide.
