Overall, in the novel, knowledge and light are only seen in a good way. Walton begins the novel with a hopeful statement: “What could not be expected in the land of eternal light? »(1). Walton's views on light are pure goodness. Victor also describes light in a good way, when he describes the light shining on the lake and says that they are "the most beautiful figures" (62). This would almost have been true until this view was broken. Before Victor created the monster, he only wanted to research things to expand his knowledge about life. He loved nature and science. He devoted all his time to science and trying to discover how to create life. Victor's great motivation to create life was shattered when he first created life. The existence of the monster made the victor realize that what he had done was wrong and that he no longer wanted to embrace his knowledge. Victor begins to see that there are two sides to light, that it can either give light or burn light. The monster and Victor notice the different results the light gives off. Victor describes the light as wonderful and brilliant, but immediately after his first creation, he realizes that the light was not good after all.
