Domestic violence is a global problem in past and present society. Domestic violence, or battery, is a pattern of psychological, economic, and sexual coercion by one partner in a relationship, punctuated by physical assault or credible threats of bodily harm. People from all social, ethnic, economic or religious groups are affected by domestic violence; whether the couple is married, divorced, living together or as a couple. Victims of domestic violence can also be young, old, heterosexual or homosexual. Domestic violence typically involves women as victims and men as perpetrators, but that doesn't mean others can't be beaten or perpetuate abuse, such as women on men or same-sex abuse. Domestic violence has become a common phenomenon in today's society and more and more couples are experiencing it. All relationships have disagreements, but abuse involves every aspect of a relationship. It has ultimately been shown that domestic violence is socialized in society and questions arise as to why women are more likely to be victims than men. Abusers often have low self-esteem and gain a sense of power by humiliating and controlling their partner. Controlling techniques may include verbal insults intended to lower the partner's self-esteem, threats intended to scare the partner into obeying, or mind games intended to make the victim insecure and weak. Abusers who are unable to control their own lives and demonstrate the power they have in the relationship tend to resort to physical violence, such as pushing, slapping, pinching, grabbing, or other demonstrations of physical strength. In this regard, men fear losing the power and authority they once held. As women take on more productive and income-generating roles, many men feel their masculinity is threatened; many men are wondering about the role they will play in the future. These changing social conditions mean that men will have to adopt new roles in society, which may not be the easiest to do, as they are so accustomed to current social norms that it may take some time to adjust to the news. As a result, violence is likely to be seen as a defense used by men to protect their disappearing roles. Domestic violence can therefore be combatted by breaking the gender stereotypes and socialization they once knew and accepting the development of women in today's society..
