Essay / Ethical Issues in Business - 1834
The textbook defines business ethics as “the accepted principles of right or wrong governing the conduct of businessmen.” Business ethics also governs the members of a profession and the actions of an organization. Many organizations implement an ethics strategy which is “a plan of action that does not violate accepted principles”. These principles are used to guide organizations and employees to make the right decisions. A number of issues affect international business ethics. They include employment practices, human rights, environmental regulations, corruption and the moral obligations of multinational companies. Employment practices refer to the working conditions in which an employee must work. This can be very difficult to assess, as working conditions in a host country are often inferior to those in the organization's home country. Many organizations have had to fight against these regulations. A good example of this is the difficult situation Nike found itself in in the 1990s. There were numerous news reports about the very poor working conditions of most of its subcontractors. The Nike company was not breaking any laws, but it was questioning the ethics of using a sweatshop. After this incident, a number of questions arose in the international market. In recent years, many companies have severed ties with organizations that use unsafe and unfair labor practices. The next major international trade issue concerns human rights. Today, in many countries, fundamental human rights are not respected. In much of the developed world, basic rights are taken for granted, such as freedom of speech or freedom of movement. The international business community often wonders if we should... middle of paper... follow them either. It is clear that there are many ethical violations and if a company were to act in this manner today it would be highly disrespected. Utilitarian ethics says that the moral value of actions is determined by their consequences. In other words, your actions are based on the consequences you create and whether they are good or bad. However, it can be very difficult to measure this. On the other hand, Kantian ethics says that people should be treated as an end and not as a means to achieve the ends of others. This means that everyone should respect others and treat them like humans. The last theory is the theory of justice which states that economic goods and services are distributed fairly. This means that everyone gets their fair share, no matter what. However, these practices are often difficult to implement and it is also difficult to achieve results..
