I believe that commercialization happens and needs to be there once you make sports a business. It has to be. Athletes, coaches and owners today earn millions of dollars more than some wealthy business owners. However, some critics of the commercialization of sport believe that commerce is corrupting sport. The corruption thesis according to Simon on p. 190 of Fair Play: The Ethics of Sport: "We can understand corruption to mean that the values internal to sport, such as those of fair competition, sportsmanship and perhaps the mutual quest for excellence, are or have already been undermined by the increasing commercialization of sport. » During my classes, I didn't entirely agree with the idea that commercialization could completely corrupt sport with a more appropriate understanding of the corruption thesis; I now understand how this could happen and where many critics of the commercialization of sport come from.
