Essay / What is Asperger's syndrome? - 2757
Many people around the world are unaware of the disorders associated with autism. Some people don't even know what autism really is. Asperger's syndrome is one puzzling disorder, among countless, that needs to be recognized. Although it is one of the most well-known disorders, understanding Asperger's syndrome is far from common knowledge. There are a lot of misconceptions and people unaware of what Asperger's syndrome actually is. Not being sure of the characteristics of a person with Asperger's allows people to live their lives without understanding the disorder itself and the people who have it. Asperger's syndrome is one disorder among many others on the autism spectrum. The autism spectrum includes early childhood autism, infantile autism, Kanner autism, high functioning autism, atypical autism, pervasive developmental disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder and Asperger syndrome (“American Psychiatric Association”, 2013). All disorders found on the spectrum are neurodevelopmental disorders. These types of disorders involve disorders in the development and growth of the brain and nervous system (Lord and Bishop, 2010). Each disorder found on the spectrum may have similarities, but is also different from one another. Asperger's syndrome was not part of the autism spectrum until the last update of the DSM-5 in 2013. It was classified in its own category, but it is now an autism spectrum disorder , or ASD (Macintosh and Dissanayake, 2004). The shift of Asperger's syndrome across the autism spectrum has occurred due to various similarities to ASD. Hans Asperger was the first to describe Asperger's syndrome, also known as AS, in 1944. He explained that AS causes clumsiness, poor motor skills, and an inability to walk or run smoothly (Miyahara , Tsujii, ...... middle of article ......ih.gov/disorders/asperger/detail_asperger.htmPolimeni, MA, Richdale, AL and Francis, AJP (2005). in autism, Asperger's disorder, and typically developing children.Journal of Research in Intellectual Disabilities, 49(4), 260-268 http://www.bowdiges.org/documents/files/Sleep_problems_in_ASD_-. _Survey.pdfTreating Autism and Asperger Syndrome (3 February 2012). nhs.uk/Conditions/Autistic-spectrum-disorder/Pages/Treatment.aspxWaas, B.
