Essay / 1984 by George Orwell - 822
George Orwell created two main characters with contradictory traits who believe in the idea of love in a world where it is forbidden. Although both are secret Party rebels and share the same hatred for the Party's totalitarian power, Julia and Winston display a remarkable number of differences between them. The differences between them include their morality, motivation towards rebellion, and personality. Julia represents elements of humanity that Winston does not: survival, instincts, pure sexuality, and cunning (1984 by George Orwell Character Analysis Julia). His actions show the lack of emotional connection with anyone, even Winston. The feelings of connection she shared with Winston do not outweigh the fear of her own mortality. Julia is a true survivor and she is ready to perform any act to carry out her self-centered rebellion. She spent an incredible amount of time attending conferences and protests, handing out literature for the Junior Anti-Sex League, and preparing banners for Hate Week. , make collections for the savings campaign and other similar activities. It paid off, she says: it was like camouflage. If you obeyed the small rules, you might break the big ones (Orwell 129). She presents herself as a passionate follower of the Party, but beneath the surface she embodies the spirit of a bird; his desires are to be free and enjoy life. Winston is the complete opposite; he is consciously determined to differentiate fact from fiction. This is seen when Winston learns of Julia's sexual history. “His heart skipped a beat. Dozens of times she had done it; he would have liked it to be hundreds of thousands. Anything that hinted at corruption always filled him with wild hope.” (Orwell 125). The sudden surprise...... middle of paper ...... and problems. Julia maintains her demeanor and is described as calm and collected. “She became alert and matter-of-fact, put on her clothes, tied the scarlet sash around her waist, and began to arrange the details of the return journey.” (Orwell 129) This allows the reader to see that Julia is organized in her life, unlike Winston whose thoughts are scattered. Due to the extreme differences in the couple's personalities, the reader wonders if Julia ever loved Winston. Julia embodies the qualities that Winston wishes he had. The differences in their morality, their motivation for rebellion, and their personalities are the few reasons why they are attracted to each other, but it is bittersweet because their differences cause their downfall. The two characters created by George Orwell needed each other to create a sanctuary from the heartless world of 1984.
