  • Essay / How philosophical, religious or cultural ideas...

Civilization and classical systems borrowed religious and cultural ideas to legitimize gender and class inequalities. In the classical era of civilization, most cultural beliefs were an inherent reflection of religious beliefs enshrined in the doctrines of Christianity or Islam (Strayer, 2012). For example, Christianity provided a basis for the development of inherent beliefs during antiquity, particularly the period before the collapse of the Roman Empire. Christian beliefs have always presented women as lesser mortals than men. This followed the famous belief of compulsory subordination of women, especially after marriage. Christianity requires that women respect and remain subordinate to their husbands. In fact, the Christina doctrine considers man to be a representative of God in the home. In leading the family, men act as representatives of God. Therefore, classical civilization systems borrowed from Christianity would restrict the role of women. As such, gender inequality has been justified by Christian doctrines. Likewise, the Islamic religion disempowers women by creating specific roles for them. Islam views women as mere tools for the propagation of life, with the capacity to procreate being attributed to men. Women were required to cover their heads as a means of subordination to men. This has generated an inferiority and superiority complex between women and men, with the marginalization of women. Islamic regions, especially during antiquity, limited women's roles to cooking and childbearing. Men would hold leadership positions. Cultural beliefs have become the mirror of Islamic doctrines. Therefore, anyone deviating from middle of paper......ss and gender inequality is based on rationalism. For example, Aristotle developed the infamous ideal that some human beings are slaves by default (Strayer, 2012). It was therefore in their interest to be reduced to slavery. This belief, coupled with the ideal that women were a representation of infertile men, led to gender and class inequalities. In conclusion, classical civilization borrowed significantly from religion to develop its cultural practices. Thus, most Islamic and Christian regions have often developed class and gender inequalities. In regions where religion had minimal influence, culture was then defined by philosophical ideals. The Bible requires that women must remain subordinate to the man who is the head of the family. Classical civilization was the period centered on the Mediterranean Sea, relevant to ancient Greece. and ancient Rome.
