The Sun Also Rises by Ernest HemmingwayThe Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemmingway is set in the mid-1920s. The characters arrive from America, England and other ports of call. They travel from Paris to Pamplona and vice versa. For me the focus is mainly on Paris and Pamplona. This is not a novel of main events because one event leads to another. Without the emphasis being placed on a particular thing or place. The search for and/or definition of masculinity, even in Lady Brett Ashley (note that Brett is a masculine name) seems to be the central topic emphasized by alcoholism, promiscuity, sex, the fight against alcoholism. -Semitism, lost and weakened souls and just survival. In all wars, not just the “Great War,” the toll for survival is high. We live certain types of life in America, England, France and Spain but the lifestyle of the characters does not seem to change. Get up, drink, work, party, drink, have sex, then drink some more. They seem to want to exhaust themselves. It's almost as if they fear sleep and loneliness. You can't help but feel a sense of sadness and loss in everything. Where are they going? Maybe just from one place to another. What are they looking for other than having a good time? Maybe they're looking for themselves. Excitement, love, honor and life must be managed daily. Jake, who never seemed to practice what he preached, once said, "You can't get away from yourself by moving from one place to another." » Are they achieving their goals? “Well, isn’t it nice to think so” In the aftermath of World War I, men’s masculinity seemed to become indefinite. Although the novel is told in the past tense, it places emphasis on the present. Most of the characters are between 20 and 30 years old. Jake Barnes, the narrator, a war survivor who was unable to perform sexually due to his injuries. However, he was still able to feel love. He can only express his love through his non-sexual thoughts and actions. He was perhaps the most invulnerable to Brett Ashley's emasculation of all the men she loved, no matter how much or little. Jake constantly leaves us searching for the underlying meaning of what he doesn't say. This could symbolize the character's feelings of uselessness in life. Lady Brett Ashley is English, promiscuous, fatal alcoholic..
