The 40 Developmental Assets is a list of assets that help young children understand how relationships with your family and friends work and how teens can live a healthy life with them. One way to better understand assets is to examine how they appear in novels. A novel whose strengths can be seen is The Pigman by Paul Zindel, a book about the influence of parents on children and which shows children's care for the people they love. Three strengths out of 40 developmental assets were other relationships with adults, honesty and caring. These three assets are shown in the book when Mr. Pignati buys Love'n Nuts for Lorraine, John tells Mr. Pignati that he and Lorraine are not charity workers, and John lies to Norton to protect Mr. Pignati.
