Essay / The Rape Epidemic in Malaysia - 1117
IntroductionSexual crimes, especially rape, are on the rise these days. So much so that some days all we read about is this heinous crime in the newspapers. A few weeks ago, an incident in which a ten-year-old schoolgirl was forced by the driver of his van, in front of her friends and classmates, was revealed to the general public, with horror. Unfortunately, this is neither the first nor the last case we will hear about and it proved true when two men were arrested a fortnight ago for stalking and raping more than five teenage girls living in their neighborhood (Azizan 2010). .According to statistics compiled by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, the number of reported rape cases nationwide increased from 1,217 cases in 2001 to 3,626 cases in 2009. This means that In less than a decade, the number of rape cases in Malaysia has almost tripled. This shows how this problem requires immediate action to prevent it from getting even worse. Causes of Rape One of the reasons why rape occurs is due to the presence of gender inequality. All the years of men being treated as the dominant gender has led to the belief that they are more powerful than women. This is why when there are changes in the status of women in society as equals to men, there is a power struggle to reassert the dominant sex. Another factor that contributes to the frequency of rape is the flawed justice system. The ease with which rapists get away with it despite such low penalties imposed on them contributes to rapists believing that they are untouchable. It is also difficult to prove rape in court, even with the presence of modern technology (Nazlina Abd. Ghani). On top of that, rape... middle of paper ... is actually how most people live these days. : in constant fear. And unless this social ill can be resolved, this is how your children, your grandchildren and your great-grandchildren will live. Don't subject your loved ones to this kind of fate, solve this problem before it's too late. Works Cited Abd. Ghani, N. 2014.
